Facebook Is Lame

Taking Responsibility

"BP takes responsibility for responding to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We will clean it up," the company said in a statement. "BP will pay all necessary and appropriate clean-up costs," it said, adding that BP was "committed to pay legitimate and objectively verifiable claims for other loss and damage caused by the spill."

Just out of curiosity, what's the current fair market value for loss of wildlife and destruction of habitat?

RSA Animate - Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us

Several bangs for your buck: 1) some really interesting information, possibly stuff you may have felt all along, but it's so nice to have someone else arrive at this conclusion independently, and 2) the animation KICKS ASS. It's so satisfying to watch.

Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80

I know the less than 10 people who actually follow this blog have
already had it up to here with the number of my recent Joy
Division-related posts. I couldn't help myself as today marks the 30th
anniversary of the death of legendary Joy Division front man, Ian
Curtis. I just finished watching the Curtis biopic "Control". It's
very well done and a definite must-see for anyone even remotely
interested in the subject. Even if you're not a fan of Joy Division or
interested in British post-punk, the film makes for a compelling drama
that stands on its own. I have a copy if anyone local is interested.

One aspect of the movie I particularly enjoyed is that all the live
performances depicted in the film were actually performed by the
actors who are portraying the musicians. I guess they went in to the
project with the assumption that they'd learn the songs and rehearse
them so that they could play along and on film it would be convincing
enough when they overlayed the original Joy Division recordings. After
a week of rehearsals they were sounding good enough that they
convinced the director to let them actually play the songs and use
their live versions in the final film. The result adds an amazing
authenticity to the concert scenes that would've been absent had the
audio track been the original studio recordings.

Social networking for the rest of us? Maybe. Check out Diaspora.

Diaspora is an interesting approach to social networking . If they get this right (which is still a pretty big if), they may just stand a chance of addressing some of the things that make Facebook (and others of its ilk) so lame. (They still haven't articulated how they're going to fend off Mafia Wars, but for now I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.)

The interesting part of this story so far is that 4 NYU computer science students started this project with an effort to raise $10K (via the online micro-fundrasing site, Kickstarter) to fund their development efforts over the coming summer months. They're barely 2 weeks into their self-imposed 39 day funding period and they've already raised $100K. It'll be interesting to see where this goes...
