Social networking for the rest of us? Maybe. Check out Diaspora.
Diaspora is an interesting approach to social networking . If they get this right (which is still a pretty big if), they may just stand a chance of addressing some of the things that make Facebook (and others of its ilk) so lame. (They still haven't articulated how they're going to fend off Mafia Wars, but for now I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.)
The interesting part of this story so far is that 4 NYU computer science students started this project with an effort to raise $10K (via the online micro-fundrasing site, Kickstarter) to fund their development efforts over the coming summer months. They're barely 2 weeks into their self-imposed 39 day funding period and they've already raised $100K. It'll be interesting to see where this goes...
